- General Statement of Responsibilities
This is an adjunct faculty pool for the Counseling department. Counselor provides students and prospective students with information about careers, college programs, and learning resources both inside and outside of the classroom. Promotes student persistence efforts and supports a student self responsibility model. Promotes and supports student development through provision of services, support and classroom instruction designed to assist students in acquiring the personal and academic skills necessary to achieve educational and career related goals.
The Dean of Student Success is responsible for carrying out the evaluation of Student Services faculty under procedures developed by the Vice President of Student Services. The Dean confers with the Department Head of Counseling in decisions regarding faculty workload, professional growth, retention, and department staffing levels.
This position may be responsible for the training of student workers in the Counseling Department.
- Examples of Duties - Essential Functions
- Provides personal counseling services including cognitive, brief therapy in accordance with college policies and professional ethical standards.
- Provides exploratory/undecided students with career experiences with the intention of major declaration.
- Provides academic and life planning/coaching through group and individual methods to ensure career readiness and to expedite time to degree challenges.
- Instructs students in a classroom, lab or learning center, or other setting as appropriate.
- Is responsible for all college policies and practices related to instruction including preparing course materials, course syllabi, suing a student assessment process and submitting grades in a timely manner.
- Promotes and supports activities, policies, and procedures which enhance mental health throughout the college community.
- Provides counseling, mediation and appropriate referrals to students, faculty, and staff during crisis situations.
- Provides student evaluation or, referral to, other resources, schools, and agencies as required.
- Participates as a member of a team towards resolving student disciplinary issues through creation and support of success plans and behavioral interventions.
- Works collaboratively to develop appropriate and relevant curriculum and student learning outcomes that will be utilized to enhance student success and persistence.
- Utilizes relevant data to propose and implement strategic modifications to the delivery of counseling services in order to promote student persistence and success.
- Participates in the process of regularly evaluating departmental practices and policies relative to student persistence and success.
- Serves as liaison to assigned instructional departments, for the purpose of supporting student progress in the department and creating effective college systems.
- Comprehends and maintains current information concerning all college instructional programs and student services (Financial Aid, academic progress, degree audit).
- Serves as a member of college groups and committees as appointed, and is a collegial member of the college community.
- Supports students' rights, freedoms, and responsibilities through information and advocacy.
- Understands, develops, and provides an environment that supports diversity and incorporates sensitivity to diversity into the workplace.
- Participates in professional development activities.
- Maintains accurate records related to student information
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Screening Criteria
Education: Master's Degree in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, or other directly related fields required. Current licensure with National Certified Counselor (NCC), Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), or Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) preferred; eligibility for and significant progress toward, such certification required.
Only degrees received from an accredited institution will be accepted: accreditation must be recognized by the office of degree authorization, US Department of Education, as required by ORS 348.609. Final candidate will be required to provide official transcripts for required degree.
Experience: At least two years (within the past five) of counseling experience with major assignment in educational advising and career work required; community college, secondary or post-secondary preferred.
Licenses: National Certified Counselor (NCC), Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), or Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) preferred. Must possess a valid Oregon Driver's License and provide proof of an acceptable driving record.
Knowledge of: Current techniques, theories, and trends in personal, career, and educational counseling and coaching; Knowledge of student development theories, persistence issues facing community college students and state and national trends impacting student services work. Curriculum development for the adult learner; the contemporary community college's mission, role in higher education, and diverse student population; the role of accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA); a variety of pedagogical methods, including lecture, group activity, discussion and individual instruction to accommodate a variety of learning styles.
Ability to: Function as an effective and productive team member; assist people in the process of decision-making, and academic concerns; respond to and work effectively and respectfully with colleagues and students from diverse ethnic, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds, and representing a diversity of preferences related to gender and spirituality; communicate well verbally and in writing; work collaboratively as a member of the Counseling Department; participate in curriculum and program development; participate in the student advising program and college-wide efforts to improve student persistence and success; demonstrate experience or potential for innovation and creativity, including the use of technology; demonstrate a commitment to professional standards and growth; experience/ability to teach in the classroom and/or online; and use computer applications for communication and learning, including, but not limited to word processing, networks, the internet, spreadsheets, advising programs, and multi-media presentations. Spanish language skills preferred. Pass a criminal background check.
Physical Demands of Position: While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, bend, kneel, stoop, communicate, reach and manipulate objects. The position requires mobility. Duties involve moving materials weighing up to 5 pounds on a regular basis such as files, books, office equipment, etc., and may infrequently require moving materials weighing up to 15 pounds. Manual dexterity and coordination are required over 50% of the work period while operating equipment such as computer keyboard, calculator, and standard office equipment. May also be required to sit for long periods of time in meetings or traveling between counties.
Working conditions: Usual office working conditions. The noise level in the work area is typical of most office environments with telephones, personal interruptions, and background noises.

This is an adjunct faculty pool for the Counseling department. The pool will remain open until June 2020 unless positions are no longer needed. The application documents required include a cover letter, resume, letter of recommendation and unofficial transcripts. Candidates will be required to provide official transcripts for required degree(s) upon hire. Typically at the end of the year (or at any point we no longer have a hiring need for this department), we will close this pool and you will receive an email notification.
