Job Description

Astoria School District No. 1C is seeking applicants for the following position:


JOB TITLE:  Custodian - 8 hrs - District Wide

REPORTS TO:  Facilities Director

EVALUATED BY:  Facilities Director


Under the general supervision of the facilities director, personally performs and supervises routine custodial, repair and cleaning work at a school and district buildings and does related work as required.




  • High School Diploma or equivalent as required by OAR 581-37-030, Oregon Department of Education
  • Must be 18 years of age
  • Must be able to pass a background check
  • Possess and maintain a valid First Aid Card
  • Ability to adjust daily work hours throughout the year in accordance with district needs as directed by the principal and supervisor. (Summer and break hours)
  • Maintain current standards regarding the handling of bloodborne pathogens, asbestos, and hazardous chemicals

    Knowledge of:

  • Modern cleaning methods and the use, care and safety of cleaning materials and equipment
  • Requirements for maintaining school buildings and facilities in a safe, clean and orderly condition
  • Methods, materials, equipment, and tools used in routine buildings and facilities maintenance work
  • Operation of heating plant and equipment

    Ability to:

  • Layout work and to estimate time, tools and materials needed
  • Demonstrate knowledge of and expertise in the basic techniques of electrical layout and repair, basic plumbing, mechanics, maintenance, carpentry, and facility maintenance
  • Maintain simple records
  • Establish and maintain harmonious relationships with students, fellow employees, and the general public
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
  • Establish and maintain harmonious relationships with students, fellow employees, and the general public
  • Obtain and maintain an Oregon Drivers License

   Perform physical requirements which may include:

  • Moderate to extensive degree of physical stamina and frequent lifting up to 50 lbs. and occasional lifting up to 100 lbs
  • Frequent and prolonged standing, walking and bending
  • Exposure to outdoor weather conditions of heat, cold and where ventilation may be inadequate
  • May require exposure to chemicals, dirt, paint, chalk, noise, odors and the possibility of electrical shock
  • Ability to operate tractors, mowers, dump truck, district vehicles, forklift, power tools and etc.




  • Sees that the building and premises, including sidewalks, driveways and play areas, are neat, clean and free of offensive writing at all times
  • Checks daily to ensure that all exit doors are locked after the hours of building occupancy
  • Lower the flag(s) in the PM
  • Complies with local laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of all trash, rubbish, waste and chemicals
  • Confers with head custodian/principal and teaching staff regarding special custodial needs
  • Inspects the building for fire, electrical and other safety hazards
  • Receives job requests for services and repairs
  • Performs the cleaning of walls, furniture, woodwork and other equipment and sees that floors are stripped and waxed periodically
  • Checks on restrooms and replenishes supplies
  • Directs visitors and safeguards all school property
  • Sees that rooms are set up for special events and needs
  • Participates in the complete cleaning and routine maintenance during summer
  • Responds to emergency situations, such as water leaks, fires and snow removal  This duty may require adjustment to irregular or extended hours necessary to cope with the problem
  • Knowledge of Astoria School District Policies and building procedures
  • Regular and acceptable attendance is required
  • Performs other duties as assigned




SALARY RANGE:  $14.43 min/Hourly
